Who produces Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)?

Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are primarily produced by organizations that focus on mapping and geographic information science. The National Mapping Division of the US Geological Survey (USGS) is responsible for creating and maintaining national topographic and elevation datasets in the United States.

The work of the National Mapping Division involves collecting a wide variety of spatial data, including elevation information obtained through various methods such as aerial surveys, satellite imagery, and LiDAR. These DEMs serve critical roles in diverse applications, such as environmental monitoring, urban planning, and flood risk assessment.

While other organizations listed have their own roles in spatial data production, their primary focus may not be on producing DEMs. The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency primarily provides geo-spatial intelligence for national defense, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is more concerned with atmospheric and oceanographic data, and the Environmental Protection Agency deals primarily with environmental protection and regulation rather than the direct production of elevation models. Therefore, the National Mapping Division of the USGS remains the principal authority for generating comprehensive Digital Elevation Models.
